"Il Picchio" IGT Rosso Toscana 2015
Podere Erica is a very small farm, located in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti. The beautiful area of Chianti Classico is hilly and almost entirely covered by natural woods. Two Californian spouses in love with Italy, Jan and Neal Dempsey, decided to buy it in 2005 and in 2009 they began their successful collaboration with Marco Giordano, a young local oenologist and winemaker.
Thanks to the skill of Marco, whose attention is entirely focused on the growth of grapes that fully express the territory, Podere Erica has achieved organic certification in just a few years. Biodynamic preparations, cover crops, non-invasive agricultural works, the use of minimal doses of sulphites and the non-use of oenological adjuvant, are the production guidelines.
The company, in addition to producing extra virgin olive oil, has a small breeding of hens, donkeys and pigs of the Hungarian Mangalica breed. The contribution of animal energy is in fact considered fundamental within the ecosystem of a biodynamic farm.
Total area planted with vines: 2 hectares
Average annual production of the winery: 12.000 bottles
Grapes owned by the winery: 100%

Matteo and Mina are the owners of this delightful farm, located in the north-west of Tuscany, more precisely in the country-side nestled between the Apuan Alps, the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea, just 5 km from the city walls of Lucca.
The farm develops between two rivers, the Serchio and the Freddana. In the plain the soils are loose, silty-sandy with the presence of pebbles. In the hills the soil matrix becomes more clayey with good skeleton. The exposure goes from south-east to south-west. The proximity to the sea ensures a large amount of light and constant ventilation. The mountains provide a good supply of water and cool nights even in summer. The farm includes woods, arable fields, olive groves and 18 hectares of vineyards.
Matteo was born in Florence. He was a typical city boy who, however, became fond of agriculture thanks to his grandfather Felice. Once he had inherited the estate from his grandmother, he decided to study enology and viticulture, starting a journey that took him to Bordeaux, where he obtained a Master in Enology and Viticulture, and also an award as best taster. Mina, of Greek origin, also attended the same master and the two met like this. After working together in France for several years, they decided to move to Italy and manage the family winery.
Their philosophy is to produce terroir wines, experimenting with organic and biodynamic farming, with an ecological spirit, and thus be able to contribute to the growth of the small but noble Denomination of Controlled Origin of Lucca, DOC Colline Lucchesi.
Total area planted with vines: 19 hectares
Average annual production of the winery: 135.000 bottles
